Military: In 1902, Charles joined the U.S. Navy for a four year hitch, which he completed in 1906. During his tour of duty he served on the US Baltimore for a cruise through the Pacific Ocean that included ports of call in China and Japan as well as the other Pacific ports. His tour of duty preceded that of the "Great White Fleet" in 1907. His tour was primarily to pave the way for the peace making effort. Most people know about the "White Fleets arrival (and it is rightfully given credit for opening the Orient to American trade) but most people are unaware that the "White Fleet's" cruise was mostly a ceremonial cruise. The real work was done by the "Gray Fleet" that called on the ports in 1903-04. In addition to the Oriental Cruise his tour of duty included calls at Manila, Honolulu, San Francisco, and Seattle. He collected silver spoons at each port of call. I have six postcards Charles sent from various ports around the world to his good friend George Tehan in Springfield, Ohio.
